Chick Baruffi

Charles “Chick” Baruffi–Principal–Director of Range Operations at Caliber Gun Range has been involved in the Shooting Sport Industry for 35 years both as a trainer and a competitor. Pete Milionis

Petros “Pete” Milionis, a retired Chicago Police officer with more than 20 years of experience, including serving as the primary firearms/carbine instructor for the S.W.A.T. team over 10 years. Pete was also full-time operational member and element leader in the execution of hostage rescue/barricaded subjects and high risk search warrants. Caliber Gun Range is honored to feature such an accomplished instructor, teacher, and firearm competitor. Pete also is currently a subject matter expert, also lead instructor for the U.S. State department anti-terrorism assistance program in the training of high threat protection details responsible for the protecting national leaders. Pete has been competitive in USPSA for the past decade, earning the classification of grand master. Although everyone would prefer to have a long gun in a tactical situation the truth is the vast majority of confrontations require you to defend yourself with a pistol. This 2 day class will focus on tactically deploying the pistol from concealed carry to offensively fighting with the pistol. Students gear is explained, discussed and installed then the mechanics of the draw are taught by winning competitor TD Roe who focus’ on the best stance, grip, sight picture and trigger operation techniques. Firearm laws vary from State to State and obtaining Utah’s CCW permit allows reciprocity with 31 other States. This three level multi-week course is designed to take the novice shooter through live-fire drills of increasing complexity in a calm and supportive atmosphere. Through practical hands-on exercises, the student will be introduced to several shooting scenarios while maintaining firearms safety and the basics of proper handgun use. Bad habits will be addressed and corrected in Level I of the course. Level II takes the student through standing, kneeling, multiple targets, point shooting, tactical reloading and dim light drills. In Level III, movement and holster work will be added. This course introduces the student to low light shooting concepts. Class will begin by discussing the effects of light on the human eye and examine techniques and tactics for operating in low-light environments to effectively acquire targets or identify threats. The student will cover several methods for using white lights to compensate for the effects of low-light. Students will then move out to the range to conduct live-fire low-light practical shooting drills. This course will be a pre-requisite for the advanced portion, which includes scenario based exercises.

1. Your firearm and holster! Caliber Gun Range has a limited number of firearms we will supply at no charge as long as ammunition is purchased from us. Please call ahead to reserve a handgun.
2. Caliber Gun Range will supply both eye & ear protection for those who are in need.
3. You will need 150 rounds of ammunition for this course. A one time only discount will apply for this course only.
4. You will need a minimum of two (2) magazines for this class. (More is better!)
5. The purpose of this class is to train from concealment so you need to bring the holster you are going to use. Holsters for various handguns are available in our pro-shop, check ahead.
6. All firearms will remain cased & unloaded until you are instructed to begin training on the range.

Equipment Required: On Range Day: Your personal handgun appropriate for duty or concealed carry (can be rented from Caliber Gun Range at an additional cost). 100 rounds of ammunition – 380, 9mm or 38 are recommended (can also be purchased from Caliber Gun Range). Strong side hip holster, a quality belt designed to carry a holster and firearm is strongly recommended, additional magazines or speed loaders with pouches (at least two), ear and eye protection, baseball cap. No guns are necessary in the classroom.

This course was specifically designed to conform to the State of Illinois forty-hour requirement for employment as an Armed Private Security Officer. When combined with the 20 hr. Basic Security Course it constitutes a complete 40 hour Armed Security Course as mandated by the Private Detective, Private Alarm, Private Security, Fingerprint Vendor, and Locksmith Act of 2004. The training will also cover a number of areas, including a review of criminal law and penalties as they relate to private security, criminal and civil liability and responsibilities involving armed private security actions and the use of force. Several Basic Pistol videos will be used to support textbook material as well as hands-on practice in the classroom.

This three level multi-week course is designed to take the novice shooter through live-fire drills of increasing complexity in a calm and supportive atmosphere. Through practical hands-on exercises, the student will be introduced to several shooting scenarios while maintaining firearms safety and the basics of proper handgun use. Bad habits will be addressed and corrected in Level I of the course. Level II takes the student through standing, kneeling, multiple targets, point shooting, tactical reloading and dim light drills. In Level III, movement and holster work will be added. This course is designed to reinforce basics, maintain proficiency and acquire new technique making the student a proficient, safe and responsible handgun operator ready to move up to tactical training.

The training will cover a number of areas, including criminal law and penalties as they relate to private security, criminal and civil liability and responsibilities involving private security actions, arrest, search and seizure, the use of force, arrest and control techniques, fire prevention, safety and related equipment, service of process, report writing, civil rights and public relations.

This is an excellent course for anyone wishing to get started or brush up on their reloading skills. Students will then load their own ammunition and fire that ammo through a chronograph on the range to see the results of their efforts.
